learning national language + culture

Mid-May I moved to the coast of Papua New Guinea to the Madang Province for a little over 3 months. It is here that all new church planters with Ethnos360 come to learn language and culture and to formally get acclimated to the country. I was told it was hot, dangerous, and a demanding schedule but no one told me how much I would love it all. I came to Papua New Guinea thinking and living like an American and with each passing day I strive to live and to see life through the eyes of the people here. It takes time. It takes doing life with them and humbling yourself day in and day out.

For a snapshot of what my time looked like, check out this video...

It is in the midst of doing life...cooking, working in the garden, washing clothes, putting kids to sleep, fishing, going to town, taking care of sores, going to school, market, doctor’s appointments, etc that I was able to see a window, a glimpse into how they see the world…their fears, their joys, their motivations for certain actions and beliefs.

The apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians, “I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.”

I am in the midst of experiencing and learning the true worthiness of the message we are called to preach. This life is but a breath and with each friendship gained, I see a taste of the sweetness heaven will someday be, surrounded by believers from every tribe tongue and nation.

Thank you for every prayer, word of encouragement and support in this work. With each passing day I am aware of the enormity of the task that lies ahead and grateful for the strength the Lord provides. If you are curious about something or have specific questions don’t ever hesitate to email me and as soon as I have a moment, I would love to fill you in!

much love, rachel!
